If you’ve been injured in a transport accident in Victoria, you may be eligible for funded physiotherapy treatment through the Transport Accident Commission (TAC). Many people don’t realise how to access this support—or that they even qualify. Here’s a simple guide on how it works.
What is the TAC?
TAC is a government body that helps cover the costs of medical treatment and rehabilitation for people injured in transport accidents in Victoria, regardless of who was at fault.
Are You Eligible?
You may be eligible for TAC support if:
- You were injured in a car, motorcycle, bus, train, tram, or pedestrian accident in Victoria.
- The accident was reported to the police and lodged with TAC.
- You have a TAC claim number.
If you’re not sure whether your injury or accident is covered, you can contact TAC or ask your healthcare provider for guidance.
Do You Need a GP Referral for Physiotherapy?
Not necessarily. You don’t need a referral to start physiotherapy under TAC, as long as your claim is accepted. You can book directly with a physiotherapist, and they will bill TAC directly for your sessions.
How to Start Physiotherapy Through TAC
Here’s what to do:
- Lodge your TAC claim: You can do this online or over the phone. Once accepted, you’ll receive a TAC claim number.
- Find a TAC-registered physiotherapist: Most clinics will state if they accept TAC patients. Just ask when you book.
- Provide your TAC claim number at your appointment: This allows the physio clinic to bill TAC directly. You won’t be paying out of pocket for approved treatment, unless they charge a gap.
- Attend your sessions: Your physiotherapist will assess your injury, provide treatment, and help with recovery goals like returning to work or sport.

What Does TAC Cover?
TAC typically covers:
- Initial and ongoing physiotherapy appointments
- Exercise programs or rehabilitation
- Equipment (if clinically required and approved)
- Usually no gap fees apply if you see a provider who accepts TAC’s payment rates.
When Is Approval Needed?
Within the first 90 days after your accident:
- You can access physiotherapy treatment without prior approval from TAC
After 90 days:
- Your physiotherapist must complete an Allied Health Treatment and Recovery Plan and request further TAC approval before continuing treatment
If it’s been more than 6 months since your last TAC-funded treatment:
- Prior approval is required before resuming physiotherapy
